滑鼠W 是60年代發明，1968年12月9日，世界上的第一個 滑鼠W 誕生於美國 史丹福大學W 。
它的發明者是 Douglas Englebart博士。
其後80年代才由 MacintoshW使用而流行，至今廿年其實除了由機械式轉變成光學外，技術上並未見大突破，直至最近iGardener老師看到 Cellulon 推出的 滑鼠W，是利用幾種手勢，就可以在電腦做一些特定的指令：
